Appalled at the Behavior of the Audubon Institute

A letter to the Times-Picayune
11/17/2001

I am appalled and dismayed, though not really surprised, at the complete lack of regard for the people of New Orleans displayed by Ron Forman and the Audubon Nature Institute. I am also surprised by the ignorance displayed by both Paul May and Civil District Judge Yada Magee.

The interpretation of the conservatory as an accessory structure is incorrect. Paul May, director of the city's Department of Safety and Permits, is confusing accessory use as in zoning, with accessory structure." The Conservatory did fall into the category of accessory use, relative to the zoning designation of the park, but that did not make it an accessory structure, which is more along the lines of a maintenance shed, for which demolition hearing would not be needed.

We all knew this. (Did Paul May, as well?) All we wanted was a hearing. Perhaps we could have discussed moving the structure somewhere else in the park. But no, the ANI continues to act like a bully, throwing its weight around and ignoring the people this park was designed for.

So, is Mr. May confused or are he, and the judge, comfortably in cahoots with the ANI?

Is it any wonder that the average citizen of this community distrusts the "big business/political" connection of this city?
